Naturopath recommended vaginal products

Why Quality Matters

When it comes to sexual health, the products you use can either support or disrupt your vaginal microbiome (VMB) and pH balance. Many mainstream brands contain synthetic fragrances, parabens, petrochemicals, and other irritants that can upset the delicate vaginal environment. The skin and mucosal tissue of the vulva and vagina are highly absorbent and sensitive. Ingredients in intimate products don’t just sit on the surface, they are absorbed through the skin and can directly impact your microbiome, pH levels, and susceptibility to vaginal infections.

What to Look For

Fragrance-free and non-toxic- synthetic fragrances and dyes can irritate and disrupt the vaginal microbiome. Look for “fragrance-free” labels and avoid parabens, phthalates, and sulphates. Purchase products containing all natural ingredients with minimal preservatives.

pH-balanced- products that are too alkaline can shift the vaginal pH and increase the risk of bacterial vaginosis (BV). Choose intimate products that mention ‘pH-balanced’ on the label.

Microbiome-friendly- choose products that support a healthy VMB by looking for products that mention ‘microbiome-friendly’ on the label.

Condom compatible- if you're using condoms, avoid oil-based lubricants with latex and opt for water-based options instead.

Note: Intimate washes should only be used externally on the vulva. The vagina is self-cleaning; however, use of external washes may be helpful for those prone to BV, thrush, or post-intercourse irritation.

As the vulva and vagina are highly sensitive areas, always patch test new products and discontinue use if irritation occurs. If you are unsure which products are right for you, or are experiencing symptoms like irritation, dryness, pain or discomfort, strong odour, or abnormal discharge, it is recommended to seek advice from a qualified naturopath. We can help guide you toward the most suitable options and may recommend vaginal microbiome testing for a deeper insight into which specific microbes are driving symptoms.
